Do you have a recurring dream that is disturbing or nightmarish?

Is this dream interfering with your sleep?  Keeping you awake for fear of returning to it?

Would you like to understand the meaning of the dream and how to work with the dream material?

I would like to help.

Sometimes clients report having recurring dreams that are either disturbing, “make no sense”, or are just plain nightmarish.

There are many views about dreams and what they might mean to the dreamer. Some believe that they are just “left overs” from the day. Others believe that they are due to ongoing and unresolved conflicts that are trying to work themselves out in the dream. Others believe that they happen because of what they watched, listened to, or experienced just before going to sleep.

My approach to dream material follows a Jungian approach. This approach views dreams from a more “growth-oriented” perspective, which looks at what may be coming up from the unconscious mind in order to move the dreamer along in their growth process. This approach looks at all the figures in the dream, which can sometimes come from images just watched, listened to, or experienced right before falling to sleep, as some aspect of the dreamer that is trying to engage with the dreamer in a way that will get their attention about an area in their life needing further exploration. This exploration often leads to insight development that can lead to growth and deeper understanding of the self. Recurring dreams can mean that the dreamer is not “getting the message” and thus, it will keep repeating itself to try to get the message across.

When we look at a dream together, we will look at all the associations related to the dream material to find missing links, patterns, and possible connections to things that the dreamer may be unconscious of, ideas that need to be brought to consciousness. Bringing things to consciousness means that we are becoming more aware of things that get in our way and keep us from being successful, happy, content, at peace with self and others. Things that can get in our way can include outdated ideas, attitudes, beliefs, values, feelings, etc.

Once we have worked through the meaning of a dream, clients often find that their sleep improves and that they begin to welcome dreams of all kinds, knowing that ultimately there will be a message of extreme value in their most disturbing dreams.
